The Information Specialist provides assistance to personal computer users within Arkansas Best Corporation and subsidiaries and to other Data-Tronics departments.

Functions of the Information Specialist include analyzing, advising, instructing, and assisting corporate users in the most effective use of the personal computer tools available to them. The responsibilities also include diagnosing and solving personal computer hardware/software problems encountered by corporate users.

Other duties include training others in the use of computer-based tools, installing/replacing various personal computer hardware components and software packages/upgrades, and supporting other activities of this large, state-of-the-art data-processing center.

The hardware/software environment is very diverse and challenging. Hardware used by the corporate family includes the latest personal computers and peripherals used as stand-alone machines or linked by various local area network architectures. Operating system software includes Windows 2000 and XP. Applications software includes Microsoft Office and many other business oriented products. Network software includes Windows 2000 and 2003 Server.

The Information Specialist position requires a four-year college degree with a data-processing concentration. The candidate must also possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have experience with personal computers, networking, and training. Occasionally, a candidate must be able to lift up to 45 pounds. In addition, familiarity with Arkansas Best Corporation's personal computer hardware and software environments provides an advantage.

Each new employee is assigned a trainer. The trainer is highly knowledgeable in the applications used by a specific business segment as well as personnel that will become the Information Specialist's customers. The trainer will provide the new employee guidance and direction on any projects assigned.

Following the position of Information Specialist is that of Information Analyst which provides increased leadership and responsibilities. For those who are oriented toward application development, there are opportunities to move into the Systems Analyst position. Because of Arkansas Best Corporation's diversified line of business interests, there are also opportunities for advancement into other subsidiaries within the company.
